  1. Doepfer A-149-1 Quant./Stored Random Voltages

This module is based on the legendary Buchla 265 / 266 Source of Uncertainty and is a exceedingly complex random voltage generator. On the one hand it provides quantised random voltages with voltage controllable amplitude (or: amount of possible random voltages) and on the other hand random signals with 256 possible states whose probability and distribution can be set manually or per control voltage.

  2. Verbos Electronics - Random Sampling

A tasty potpourri if various random functions, seasoned with some pinches of random and garnished with a rarely seen analog shift register.
Besides random the module can also generate audio signals, because the two fluctuating random voltages also can be used as voltage controlled piched noise sound sources and three different flavours of analog noise are a good base for drum sounds. Single stages of the analog shift register can be broken out and used as sample & hold units.

To recreate more or less every function of the Random Sampling using modules of an affordable manufacturer you would require more than the double space and it wouldn't be significantly cheaper.

  3. Steady State Fate - Ultra Random Analog

Random = an event lacking predictability. The Ultra Random Analog module provides you with more than enough of this, in a number of different styles:
Three clocked stepped signals based on sample & hold circuits: two are fed by internal noise, either hard stepped or smoothed by a slew circuit plus a third flavour which alternates betweeen both S&Hs and can be fed by external signals. Then there's an entirely voltage controllable fluctuating random output, a voltage controllable generator of random gates and triggers and finally a vactrol based integrator. And as the module needs a clock, it has a wide frequency range clock generator integrated, able to track 1V/octave.

  5. Sputnik Modular - West Coast Random Source

The West Coast Random Source is a clone of the reverend mother of random, the Buchla 266 Source Of Uncertainty. It generates noise in three timbres, sample & hold, then fluctuating, quantized and stored random voltages and finally an slew limiter. It might be a large module but you won't get more random of all shades from one single module.

  7. Epoch Modular - Benjolin

The Benjolin's circuitry is based on Rob Hordijk's well-known Blippoo Box, an unique instrument. It is a chaotic sound generator with 2 VCOs that are played autonomously by the "Rungler", a type of shift register that gets it's signals from the VCOs. A 2-pole filter with lowpass and high pass outputs is integrated in the Benjolin, too.

  8. Make Noise Wogglebug Mk2

The Wogglebug: your personal monster for the modular system which can produce clocked stepped and smoothed random voltages, the ominous Woggle CV and featuring two oscillators that are controlled by random and finally the ringmodulated output of both VCOs. The module can be clocked externally but it has an clock generator and additionally a random gate burst generator, creating fast, short random pulses.

The new version in black is smaller, has a stable clock, CV of influence parameter and some other minor changes, see below.

  12. ADDAC 501 Complex random (V2)

The ADDAC501 does random CV generation and outputs it through four independent channels. You can control the desired range of voltages and time frequency at which new values are generated.
It can also be triggered by an external CV source or the internal clock and the output voltages can be either free or quantized (if you prefer to have a standard C Major Pentatonic scale).
Finally you can choose between pure randomness or a brownian distribution, for both the voltage and time intervals.
