The Duo’s synthesizer features two oscillators. One of them generates a saw tooth waveform. The other produces pulse waves with variable width. A potentiometer allows users to detune or deactivate the saw oscillator. For processing signals, there is a low pass filter with adjustable cutoff and resonance parameters. The synthesizer's VCA comes equipped with a level potentiometer and a decay envelope. Four buttons allow users to momentarily add glide and accent functions as well as bit reduction and delay effects.
The synthesizer can be played in real-time via a built-in pentatonic keyboard. It features a range of two octaves plus transpose options. The keyboard also used for programming the Duo’s sequencer. The composition tool features eight steps, which can be muted individually. Furthermore, there are control elements for adjusting the note lengths and the playback speed. A boost button makes it possible to double the tempo momentarily. A random function allows musicians to create aleatoric patterns.
Drum sounds can be triggered via two touch sensors. A speaker at the bottom of the Dato Duo allows users to listen to their music without any additional equipment. Alternatively, it is possible to connect the instrument to monitor speakers, a HiFi system or headphones. Via Sync and MIDI ports, musicians can integrate the Dato Duo into a studio setup. For feeding power to the machine, there is a Micro-USB connector. (A power supply is included.)
